Kolkata murder-rape case: Principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College resigns; says, ’she was like my daughter’

Dr. Sandip Ghosh resigns as Principal of RG Kar Medical College due to defamation on social media and the loss of a doctor he viewed as his daughter. He hopes to avert similar incidents in the future.

Amid criticism over the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh resigned from his position on Monday morning, citing defamation on social media platforms.

“...I am getting defamed on social media...The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign...I don't like that this should happen to anyone in future…,” he told media persons.

RG Kar doctor death: Here are top 10 updates

1) “...The non-medicos do not care about this. This has become only a problem of the medical fraternity. This incident is of a girl who has been raped and murdered in her safe space. We demand justice. We want the actual perpetrator to be captured…,” said Dr. Anisha in Chandigarh.

2) West Bengal BJP leader and advocate of Calcutta High Court Kaustav Bagchi filed a petition in the High Court, demanding a CBI probe into the rape-murder of a PG trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

3) FORDA India president Dr Aviral Mathur says, “…everyone should condemn this incident. Yesterday, we issued a notice under FORDA for a nationwide strike where we demanded a few things...We will call off the strike when our demands will be addressed as we don't want the patients to suffer. The emergency services are going on for the convenience of patients...”

4) In Delhi, Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) AIIMS staged a protest in support of the woman doctor who was sexually assaulted and murdered in RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.

5) “Three junior doctors and one house staff summoned by Kolkata police Headquarters, Lalbazar. They were on duty on the night of the incident,” said Kolkata Police sources as quoted by ANI.

6) “We have three main demands. First, a CBI fast-track investigation because the State Government's investigation is very biased. They want to nab any innocent and silence us. But we won't let this happen. This is a gang-rape and murder, committed by 2-3 people. This is Nirbhaya part 2,” said a doctor, protesting at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.

7) “Second, the insensitive authorities of RG Kar which is issuing statements like 'what was the girl doing alone at night' when this happened in the doctors' duty room, be permanently removed. Third, Central Protection Act be implemented in all hospitals across India,” the protestor said.

8) After meeting Secretary MoHFW, Apurva Chandra, FORDA General Secretary Dr Sarvesh Pandey, says “We met the Health Secretary. We released a press release yesterday mentioning our demands that the Principal of RG Kar Medical College should be removed immediately, CBI inquiry, fast-track court and that a committee of the Central Protection Act.”

9) “We will continue our strike until we get a written assurance that our demands will be fulfilled. During the strike, elective surgeries will be hampered and only Emergency Services will function. Around 3 lakh doctors across the country have joined the protest…,” said Dr Pandey.

10) BMC MARD announced the suspension of elective/non-emergency medical services by resident doctors from 8 am on August 13 until the acceptance of demands of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College residents, immediate appointment of a central agency to investigate the case, establishment of a Central Protection Act, an immediate audit and recruitment of the security measures at all medial institutions and that of a detailed report on the total number of CCTV cameras installed in respective hospitals are met.
