Hathras stampede: In a tragedy, at least 116 people died and several injured after a stampede broke out during the conclusion of a ‘satsang’ or religious event in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras. The incident happened at Phulrai village near Mandi of Sikandrarau.
At 9 pm it was reported that the death toll from the tragic incident had reached to 116. Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V said, "116 people have been confirmed dead. 18 people are injured. Treatment is being ensured for the injured in Aligarh district. Primary investigation is being carried out..."
PRO at ADG Agra Zone office in Agra confirmed that the death toll rose to 107 after the initial 27. The primary reason for the stampede at the Hathras ‘satsang’ is said to be “suffocation,” which led to discomfort among those who had gathered for the event. UP Hathras Stampede LIVE Updates
“It was a closed enclosure of tent and prima facie, it seems that suffocation led to discomfort and those gathered ran here and there leading to the stampede,” IG Aligarh Range, Shalabh Mathur said.
"Twenty-seven bodies have arrived in Etah hospital. Among those killed are 23 women, three children and a man," the official told reporters. He said people had gathered large in numbers for the event.
The stampede apparently occurred due to overcrowding, Sikandara Rao police station SHO Ashish Kumar said.
President Droupadi Murmu posted on X, “The news of the death of many devotees, including women and children, in the accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, is heart-rending. I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. He instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures.
Office of UP CM Yogi Adityanath posted on X, “UP CM Yogi Adityanath has expressed condolences to the bereaved families of those who died in the accident in Hathras district. He has also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He has directed the district administration officials to immediately take the injured to the hospital for proper treatment and to speed up the relief work at the spot. He has given instructions to investigate the causes of the incident under the leadership of ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh.”
CMO Etah, Umesh Kumar Tripathi said, “27 bodies have arrived at the post-mortem house so far, including 25 women and 2 men. Many injured have also been admitted. Further details will be revealed after the investigation. The primary reason is a stampede during a religious event.”
